Further north = aurora oval is closer overhead = lower Kp threshold needed. Bortle 1–3 darkness ensures even faint glows show up.
Aurora is visible from Ontario when the planetary Kp index reaches 4 or higher. Kp 4–5 = northern Ontario only. Kp 6+ = visible province-wide. Kp 7+ may bring aurora visible from the GTA. Check the table above and the live NOAA Kp index before driving.
Utsjoki (Northernmost Finland, lat 69.90°N, Bortle 1) — the further north and darker, the lower the Kp threshold needed. Full ranking above.
Always NORTH. The aurora oval is to your north; brightest curtains appear on the northern horizon. During Kp 7+ storms aurora can extend overhead but the strongest activity stays north.
Around local magnetic midnight, roughly 11 PM – 2 AM Eastern Time in Ontario, when geomagnetic activity statistically peaks. Plan to be set up by 10 PM.
Only during Kp 7+ geomagnetic storms (G3 or stronger), and only from a Bortle ≤ 5 site with a dark northern horizon. See aurora-suitable sites near Toronto.
