About Massacre Rim
Massacre Rim, in the far northwest corner of Nevada, was named the world's seventh International Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2019 — a designation reserved for the darkest, most remote places left on the planet. There is no town, no fence line and no light dome anywhere near it; this is BLM wilderness study area, not a park with a visitor centre.
What you can see in the sky
Full Milky Way arch with visible structure to the naked eye, zodiacal light, and airglow — skies dark enough that experienced observers report seeing the gegenschein.
Best time of year
Any clear, moonless night — this is one of the darkest measured places in the contiguous United States, with dark-sky quality on par with the best sites on Earth.
Why this site is worth the drive
One of only a handful of International Dark Sky Sanctuaries in the world
Sits between the Black Rock Desert–High Rock Canyon and Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, with no artificial light for many miles
Genuinely wild — high desert sagebrush and rimrock, not a developed recreation site
Practical tips for Massacre Rim
Bring everything: water, fuel, a paper map and a full tank — there is no cell coverage and no services for a long way
High-clearance or 4WD vehicle is a must on the access roads
Tell someone your route and expected return time before you go
