Bon Echo Provincial Park, on the Canadian Shield in eastern Ontario, is best known by day for the towering Mazinaw Rock pictographs — but after dark the same shield granite and low regional population keep the sky impressively clear. It's a manageable drive from Toronto or Ottawa for a weekend of camping and stargazing.

Drive from Toronto: ≈ 3.5 hours east via Highway 401 and Highway 41, near Cloyne.

Best time of year: Late summer and early autumn — the park's busy swimming season eases off, campground lights dim earlier, and skies stay clear.
