Site

The million-acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, paired with Ontario's adjoining Quetico Provincial Park, was designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2020 — one of the largest protected dark-sky areas on the continent. It's canoe-in wilderness, so the reward for the effort is about as dark as the Lower 48 gets.

Drive from Toronto: Entry points are reached via the Gunflint Trail or Ely, MN; the wilderness itself is accessible only by canoe or on foot.

Best time of year: Late summer and fall for clear, dry air; aurora is a real possibility on active nights at this latitude.
