Bruneau Dunes is home to one of the only public observatories in an American state park, built around the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America. On clear Friday and Saturday nights from spring through fall, rangers open the park's telescopes to anyone who shows up.

Drive from Toronto: About an hour southeast of Boise, Idaho via Highway 78 near Mountain Home.

Best time of year: Friday and Saturday evenings, mid-March through mid-October, when the observatory runs public programs — check the season's posted schedule.
