City of Rocks is a granite-spire wilderness on the Utah–Idaho border, famous with rock climbers by day and, since gaining official Dark Sky Park certification in 2023, increasingly known for its night skies too. There's no electricity in the reserve and very little light anywhere nearby, so the Milky Way looks much as it did to travelers on the historic California Trail that once passed through.

Drive from Toronto: Near Almo, Idaho, close to the Utah border — about 2.5 hours south of Twin Falls, Idaho, mostly on paved roads with a final gravel stretch.

Best time of year: Late spring through fall for comfortable camping conditions; the granite formations make for dramatic astrophotography foregrounds any clear, moonless night.
