Denali is rated Bortle Class 1 — as dark as skies get — and its far-northern latitude means long, aurora-friendly nights from late August through April. Summer's near-endless daylight rules out stargazing then, but the shoulder seasons and winter make Denali one of the best aurora-viewing national parks in the country.

Drive from Toronto: Along the Parks Highway in interior Alaska, about 2.5 hours south of Fairbanks or 4.5 hours north of Anchorage by road.

Best time of year: Late August through April, when nights are dark enough for aurora viewing — Alaska's summer midnight sun makes stargazing impossible in June and July.
