Site

Gates of the Arctic is entirely roadless — reachable only by small plane or on foot — and covers over 8 million acres of Brooks Range wilderness above the Arctic Circle. There is no infrastructure of any kind, which also means there is no artificial light for hundreds of miles.

Drive from Toronto: No roads reach the park; access is by chartered small plane, typically from the gateway community of Bettles, Alaska.

Best time of year: Late August through April for dark-enough skies to see aurora — like the rest of interior/arctic Alaska, summer's midnight sun rules out night viewing.
