Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, in Maine's North Woods, was certified an International Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2020 — the designation reserved for the most remote and pristine sites. Its roughly 87,500 acres sit beside land conserved for over a century, and public stargazing events are hosted in the nearby town of Patten.

Drive from Toronto: Reached via ME-11 near Patten, ME, in Maine's northern interior.

Best time of year: Fall and winter for the longest, clearest nights; aurora is a realistic possibility at this latitude on active nights.
