Massacre Rim, in the far northwest corner of Nevada, was named the world's seventh International Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2019 — a designation reserved for the darkest, most remote places left on the planet. There is no town, no fence line and no light dome anywhere near it; this is BLM wilderness study area, not a park with a visitor centre.

Drive from Toronto: Reached via unpaved BLM roads more than 150 miles north of Reno, Nevada — high-clearance or 4WD strongly recommended, and cell service is essentially nonexistent.

Best time of year: Any clear, moonless night — this is one of the darkest measured places in the contiguous United States, with dark-sky quality on par with the best sites on Earth.
