Oracle is a quiet former ranch-turned-wildlife-refuge in the northern foothills of the Catalina Mountains, and it earned its International Dark Sky Park designation in 2014. It's a low-key alternative to Tucson's bigger observing sites, close enough to reach on a weeknight.

Drive from Toronto: Fly into Tucson, then drive about 45 minutes northeast to the park near Oracle, AZ.

Best time of year: New-moon nights year-round; the park runs scheduled night-sky viewing sessions.
