Site

Steens Mountain rises more than a mile above the surrounding Oregon high desert, and the Bureau of Land Management's own recreation guide specifically calls out stargazing among the things to do here. This is remote, undeveloped BLM country in the heart of the Oregon Outback — one of the darkest corners of the Lower 48.

Drive from Toronto: Accessed via the Steens Mountain Loop Road from Frenchglen or Fields, Oregon, roughly 60 miles southeast of Burns; the summit loop is a high-clearance gravel road, seasonally closed by snow.

Best time of year: Mid-summer through early fall, when the Steens Loop Road is open to the summit — it's typically closed by snow from around October to July.
