Best time: Mid-summer through early fall, when the Steens Loop Road is open to the summit — it's typically closed by snow from around October to July.

## Overview
Steens Mountain rises more than a mile above the surrounding Oregon high desert, and the Bureau of Land Management's own recreation guide specifically calls out stargazing among the things to do here. This is remote, undeveloped BLM country in the heart of the Oregon Outback — one of the darkest corners of the Lower 48.

## What to see
Milky Way over the Alvord Desert basin to the east, wide-open high-desert horizons in every direction, and excellent conditions for meteor showers given the near-total absence of artificial light.
