Torrance Barrens is the closest truly dark sky to Toronto. On a clear, moonless night you can see the Andromeda Galaxy with the unaided eye and the Milky Way reads as a physical band of light, not a smudge.

Drive from Toronto: ≈ 2 hours north via Highway 400 to Muskoka Road 13, near Gravenhurst.

Best time of year: Late spring through early autumn, on the 3–4 nights centred on each new moon. The galactic core rises after midnight from May to August.
