Voyageurs National Park is a water-based wilderness of interconnected lakes along the Canadian border, and its skies are dark enough that the park itself lists specific overlooks as its best stargazing spots. On clear nights the aurora is a realistic possibility, not just a hope.

Drive from Toronto: Accessed via International Falls or Ash River, MN, with several visitor centers reachable by road; much of the park interior is boat-access only.

Best time of year: Fall through spring for longer nights and better aurora odds; the park highlights the shoulder seasons for stargazing.
